Boot camp

The term boot camp has come to mean any intense exercise course where the body is given a full workout though originally it was a military term referring to the training of new recruits.

Not generally for the faint hearted, the idea of a boot camp is that you are pushed to test the limits of your strength and endurance. It's a way to get in shape through discipline and dedication.

Signing yourself up for a boot camp exercise programme can be an excellent way to kick start a whole new attitude to a healthier and fitter lifestyle. It's also an efficient way to burn up energy that is positive and healthy as opposed to destructive. This is why many parents choose to send their troubled teenagers to these kinds of residency programmes.

It's not just the young however that may feel they could do with focus and structure to get into better shape. For those who've found it hard to make the time or to organise a regular routine of exercise, an intensive course where the emphasis is on following the rules of a full fitness regime can be just the ticket.

It's not about turning yourself into a soldier but rather setting challenges that are intensely satisfying. With the emphasis on jumping jacks and push ups without rests in between, this is about building up the heart and lungs so that your endurance levels rise dramatically.

It's also a very efficient way to burn off calories quickly. Even if you've never been into the idea of military discipline, there is something about the intensity of this kind of exercise and the sense of achievement that comes from pushing your body that has made it increasingly popular.
