Boxing

It's not all about stepping into the ring in boxing to beat somebody up. Boxing has become increasingly popular as a form of exercise. The biggest increase in interest has been from women who in the past may have seen boxing as a rather macho aggressive sport. Now they're realising that it's a great way to give your body a full work out.

The advantage of boxing is that it works all of your muscles. It's also a great way to develop balance and coordination. It helps build stamina and to boost your energy levels. It's also a way to work off frustrations and anxiety in the positive environment of a gym or health club. The focus and concentration involved is good for you both mentally and physically. Plus you'll develop your speed and burn off calories at an impressive rate.

However it's important not to start off with fantasies of being a heavy weight champion. You need to work out where your fitness level is at and build slowly from there. A coach or instructor can help train you in how to warm up properly.

Skipping rope is particularly good for building up stamina and giving yourself a cardiovascular workout. Then it's important that you learn how to stand, move and throw punches correctly to avoid causing yourself injury. Staying light on your feet is key as well as keeping your body in line with your movement. There are six basic punches. The jab and the upper cut being perhaps the most common. As a form of exercise, this is one of the most efficient ways to get fit as it involves the coordination of your whole body.
