Tai Chi

Not what you'd typically associate with martial arts, tai chi is in fact an ancient Chinese form of self defense. These days the emphasis is more on tai chi as a relaxing means of physical exercise. Because of the slow stylised nature of the movements, the great advantage of tai chi is that it can be practiced by young and old alike.

Benefits include general toning and strengthening of the body. Great emphasis is placed on breathing correctly, which in turn helps with respiration and blood circulation. Based on traditional Chinese medical beliefs, this form of exercise is not about developing specific parts of the body.

Instead it is intended to bring mind, spirit and body into unity by balancing the flow of life energy, or chi, around your body. Usually with each session lasting half an hour, there are over a hundred movements that make up the practice. The aim is to help you relax. Thus meditation and control of the breath are key. It is thought to boost your natural immune system and prolong the life expectancy of regular practitioners. It's also great for improving your balance and coordination.

The fluid dance like movements are a way of strengthening the body, relaxing the body and promoting your overall well being. Hugely popular in both the East and West, there are said to be currently over two hundred million practitioners and it shouldn't be hard to find a class near you. It's a most enjoyable way to look after your health.
