Marathon training
There's little doubt that marathon training is a world all of its own. There are so many details you have to get right, from the mileages you run, to the shoes you wear, to the food you eat, that it is essential that you learn as much as you can before you get started.
Marathon training is a long-term endeavour - you should plan on at least six months to be properly ready to race - and like any long-term project, much of the success will come from good planning.
The first stage of marathon training is to pick a race - until you know what race you are doing you won't know how long your program should be, or if there are any particular conditions you should prepare for - heat, altitude, etc. Once you have a date and a venue, you can begin to design your program. You'll want to build gradually, increasing your mileage by no more than 10% per week, and allow plenty of time for rest.
This is an activity that can take over your life, so you have to build it into your schedule - when your workouts will be, when you'll eat, when you'll sleep and recover. Believe me, after racking up a 20 mile workout you'll want to shower, eat, and put your feet up!
But if you get it right, the achievement of crossing that finish line will last a lifetime!
