Marathon training schedule

How do you develop a good marathon training schedule? There's various ways to do it, but whichever route you choose it's crucial to get it right.

Either under or over preparing can have disastrous consequences come race day - whether that's for your personal health or just for the size of the blister's you'll have!

While some people develop their own marathon training schedule, it's probably a better option to seek expert help. That can come from a variety of sources:
  • Personal trainer
  • Running club
  • Book
  • Online coach

However you choose to develop your marathon training schedule, be sure to check references - with trainers its easy, just ask for recommendations. With books, look at customer feedback, you'll soon sort the lemons from the winners.

While most people tend to focus on the mileages, be sure to also consider the following:

  • Shoes: A good pair of shoes is essential. Indeed, it's probable that by the time you reach the starting line you'll be on your second or third pair.

  • Clothing: Conditions can vary widely from one race to another - I've done marathons in everything from 24 degrees to 95 degrees! Check on likely weather conditions for your race, and be sure to dress accordingly.

  • Food and Drink: You'll have to take both food and drink on during the race, so figure out what you like and what works for you before the race.
