Body building equipment

Lifters will argue for hours over what body building equipment you really need in order to perform the sport. At its simplest the only piece of body building equipment you need is yourself - body-weight exercise such as pull-ups, dips, squats and bench dips will go a long way towards developing a good physique.

However, when most people talk body building equipment they are talking barbells and dumbbells. With these somewhat primitive metal plates and bars, you can work every muscle in the body in innumerable different ways.

Most successful lifters concentrate on barbells and dumbbells, performing intense sets of compound muscle exercise to attain the maximum development.

That's not to say that machines don't play their part - for beginners, and for certain exercises, they are very helpful. In addition, most lifters enjoy working with cables, which have the benefit of providing resistance throughout the full range of motion.

Other essential items include benches - anyone who has ever used an inadequate bench will attest to how important this item is - plus the variety of handles and accessories (for example EZ bars) that help add variety to a workout.

Finally there are the more recent additions such as exercise balls, and the return of old favourites like medicine balls, all of which have their part to play in a comprehensive workout programme.
