Body building exercises

People often wonder is there anything about body building exercises that sets them apart form those you'd perform in a regular workout - the answer is no - and yes!

The no part is based on the notion that body building exercises are simply the same movements that all lifters perform, but done with regard to the principles of progressive resistance - that is, in order to grow, you must constantly push the muscle, force it to work hard and adapt.

And the yes part? When done properly, body building exercises show a much greater range than most lifters typically perform, and are done with an intensity that your average person would find unmanageable.

That intensity can take one of several forms:
  • Weight - hardcore lifters looking to add bulk typically lift weights far in excess of your average person. But weight isn't everything...

  • Number of sets - whereas you might stop at three sets of ten, a hard core lifter will do 5, 6, sometimes even ten sets of the same exercise in order to totally deplete the muscle.

  • Repetitions: Lifters looking to add bulk manipulate the repetitions they perform at different stages in their training. Low reps (3-6) build strength, medium reps (8-12) build bulk, while high rep training is for endurance athletes, and those in the cutting phase of their training.
