Body building

Over the years, body building has acquired a somewhat dubious reputation - fuelled in large part by the excesses and drug abuse of a small minority. However, the reality is that for the vast majority of practitioners, body building is a healthy activity that gives them the opportunity to get in shape and improve their appearance.

There's a certain beguiling simplicity to body building - it certainly confers a degree of power and confidence on its practitioners - as you have the ability to shape and control your appearance by your own efforts.

Although some drug-bloated competitors might suggest otherwise, this is a very healthy sport. The benefits of working with weights are well-documented and include:
  • Reduced body fat
  • Increased cardio fitness
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Healthier life-style
The latter is not to be underestimated. Once you become committed to the sport, you are subject to a certain self-imposed ethos - when you've just spent a couple of hours shifting several tons of metal around at the gym, you don't want to waste your efforts by eating junk food, smoking, or filling up on alcohol.

As a result, for most practitioners, the sport becomes the spur to a healthy lifestyle, encouraging them to not only work out regularly, but also eat well and get plenty of sleep. Now who could argue with that?
