Endurance training
Want to get fit? Then be sure to include endurance training in your regular workouts. Quite simply, regular endurance training is the quickest way to improve your overall conditioning.
Endurance training has gone by many names over the years, from aerobics to cardio, but the bottom line is that any form of sustained exercise that works the heart sufficiently can be considered endurance training.
Of course, there are extreme versions of it - anyone fancy the 100+ miles per week that marathon runners routinely crank out? - but for most of us, it refers to the cardio workouts we perform. So what are the most effective cardio workouts? The leading contenders would have to include:-
Running
- Walking
- Cycling (outdoors and stationary)
- Rowing
- Stepper
- Cross-trainer
- Cardio classes
Each of them has benefits and drawbacks, but the bottom line is that for any given individual, the best one is the one that you actually do! Hate running? Don't do it - take an exercise class instead. Hate classes? Head to the gym and use the cardio machines.
Whichever you do, the basic rules apply - at least three sessions per week of twenty minutes plus is the minimum amount required to yield reasonable benefits. Of course, the more you do, the more you'll get out of it!
