Essentials of strength training and conditioning

Following the essentials of strength training and conditioning will ensure that your workouts are effective. Unfortunately this is a field in which everyone seems to be an expert, and as a result, people end up following workouts that just don't get the job done.

In truth, the essentials of strength training and conditioning are quite simple, and if you apply them to your workouts on a regular basis, you will find getting in shape a whole lot easier.

So what are the essentials of strength training and conditioning?
  • Progressive Workouts: Also known as Progressive Resistance, this is the number one key to effective workouts. Quite simply it means that as you get in better shape, your workouts must get tougher in order for you to keep making progress.

  • Variety: One of the best ways to improve is to ensure that your workouts have variety - doing the same old thing each time you're in the gym will guarantee that you become stale and stop moving forwards.

  • Three Pillars: The three pillars are the three types of workouts you need to perform - these are strengthening, cardio, and flexibility. If you ignore one or more of these areas you will not achieve balanced fitness.

If you pay heed to these basics, you will find that your workouts are not only more enjoyable, but that you will make good progress in both the short and long term.
