Functional training

One of the latest fitness buzzwords is functional training. However, unlike some of the fads that have come and gone over the years, this one is likely to be around for a while, for one simple reason - it's useful!

Quite simply, functional training means performing exercises that will help you get through life a little easier. Of course each of us has different demands, different lifestyles and challenges, but there are certain core elements that most of us share.

The idea of functional training has developed out of the sports specific workouts that athletes perform - for example, a marathon runner does very different workouts from a rugby prop forward.

Applying this to everyday life reflects the fact that most of us are neither marathon runners nor rugby players, but we do have certain things in our lives that are hard work - for example, climbing stairs, carrying small children or big shopping bags, and so on.

Overall this is an idea that is about well-balanced workouts. The best way to cope with the demands of life is to include three main elements in your workouts:
  • Cardio fitness
  • Resistance workouts
  • Flexibility
By combining all of these on a regular basis, you'll be ready for all the twisting, lifting, stretching and moving that daily life throws your way.
