Plyometrics
If you want to develop quick muscular power, plyometrics is the most effective training technique you can use.
Although many people think of it as a new training system, plyometrics has been around for a long time - old school equipment such as medicine balls and Indian Clubs are some of the original items used to help develop this type of speed and strength.
Plyometrics has been popular with competitive athletes for decades, but is just now catching on in the mainstream. For those involve in sports that involve speed, strength and explosive movements, (e.g. boxing, various ball sports) this type of training is invaluable.
For mere mortals, there are however, a number of safety considerations if injury is to be avoided. This type of training works on the principle of applying an eccentric contraction (lengthening) just prior to the concentric (shortening) contraction. This transition time between eccentric contraction and concentric contraction must be very short to be effective, so the movement must be quick.
In order to safely perform these quick movements, you need good levels of physical strength, flexibility and muscle control - a strong core is essential. If developing power is something that would benefit your sports performance, the best route is to speak to a certified trainer with experience in this field. They will make an initial assessment to be sure you are ready for this type of training, then develop a program that works for you.
