Pilates exercise

Fans of Pilates exercise promote it as a unique exercise system that will improve your body's postural and alignment habits, increasing both your flexibility and ease of movement.

Pilates exercise was developed by a German with a background as a circus performer, boxer and self-defence instructor, who began working on his own program while imprisoned during World War I.

Later, while working as a hospital orderly, he came up with his famous piece of equipment the "Cadillac", which he made by attaching springs to hospital beds, and used to help support the limbs of patients unable to walk.

Pilates exercise is based on its founder's thorough understanding of human anatomy. Regular use can help in the following:
  • General fitness and body awareness
  • Excellent both pre and post natal
  • Injury prevention
  • Remedial and rehabilitation work
  • Improvement of technique for athletes and dancers
These days the technique has moved outside the custom-built studios and into homes and health clubs, where mat workouts are very popular with people of all ages, from children through to the elderly.

While you can learn this activity from a book or DVD, absolute beginners are advised to take a class at first in order to learn proper technique.
