Strength training anatomy

Understanding strength training anatomy is helpful if you are to get the most from your workouts. As with any other area, the more you know about the tools you are working with - in this case, your body - the more likely it is that you will get the results you want.

The key to understanding strength training anatomy is learning about how your muscles work - what causes them to grow, and what can hinder that process? Too many people just do a workout, and expect great results from it, with no thought given to whether they are creating the best possibility of success.

Strength training anatomy works on the principle that in order for your muscles to grow you have to stress them - that is, do hard workouts, with sufficient intensity that your body is forced to react in ways unfamiliar to it.

There are various ways of manipulating your workouts to challenge your body. While most people focus on simply adding more weight (which is certainly important), other alternatives include:
  • Reducing rest times between sets
  • Performing more sets
  • Performing more reps
  • Doing different exercises
What all of these have in common is that they will get you out of a rut, stop your body from becoming comfortable with your workouts. Once you start to 'surprise' the body on a regular basis, you have created the right environment for muscle growth.
