Strength training equipment

Choosing the right strength training equipment can make a big difference to the success of your workouts. But with so many options to choose from, how do you ensure that the strength training equipment you use is appropriate for your needs?

Actually, it's easier than it seems. The basic principle of weight lifting is that you must overload a muscle in order to make it grow. What that means is that your muscle doesn't care how you do it - if you make it work hard enough it will grow.

The main options when choosing strength training equipment are as follows:
  • Free weights (dumbbells, barbells)
  • Machines (including cables)
  • Body-weight exercises (pull-ups, dips, etc)
  • Resistance bands
In order of difficulty you would have to say that free weights and body weight exercise work the body the most, while resistance bands are the most gentle. However, before you decide bands are the way to go because they are easier, remember that the body reacts in direct proportion to the stress you put it under - the easier your workouts, the less change and growth you'll experience.

So whichever you choose, work as hard as you can, and given time you'll see good results.
