Improve posture

Want to improve posture? The first step is to analyse your current habits - this includes how you sit, stand, walk, move, and carry things. Each of these can contribute to problems, so it's important to look at all of them.

Once you've analysed what you're currently doing, it's time to look at ways of changing those habits that are causing problems. It's certainly worth the effort - if you improve posture, you'll not only look better, you'll also experience less back and neck pain.

As most problems are caused by weak or tight muscles, to improve posture you must address this issue. There is a whole range of exercises or exercise program that will help you to improve the condition of your muscles. The most popular ones include:
  • Yoga
  • Pilates
  • The Alexander Technique
  • Tai Chi
Once you have started to improve your muscles, you can address some of the most common habits people tend to slip into.
  • Sitting - avoid slouching or leaning forwards; work on keeping both feet flat on the floor (use a footrest if this is a problem); sit with shoulders straight.

  • Standing - Stand with weight mostly on the balls of the feet, feet slightly apart; avoid locking the knees; stand straight and tall, with shoulders upright.

  • Sleeping - use a firm mattress; sleep on the side or back rather than the stomach.
