Back injury exercise

Are post back injury exercises safe? That's one of the first questions people ask when they've suffered a problem in this susceptible area.

Whether or not post back injury exercises will help or worsen your condition will often depend on the cause of the pain, although in most cases, such as accidents or even osteoarthritis of the spine, staying active is recommended.

When you suffer an acute problem in this area, the temptation is to rest completely. While this is fine for the first day or so, when the muscles can go into spasm, after a couple of days bed rest is counterproductive.Staying inactive for too long can weaken the muscles and delay healing.

Back injury exercise should therefore be attempted as soon as the acute pain has resolved. The first stage is simply getting up and moving, and resuming regular day-to-day activities. Once you are out of bed, increase activity slowly, simply by trying to do a little more every day.

As soon as you have the all-clear from your doctor, you can get more active - good activities to start with are low impact ones such as walking and swimming, and gentle stretching.

Stretching increases circulation to damaged muscles, which speeds up the healing process. If this is difficult, you may find that a warm shower or bath right before stretching will loosen up tight muscles and make stretching easier.
