Knee rehab exercise

To fully recover from an injury, knee rehab exercise is essential. This is a fragile joint that can be subject to huge stresses whenever we move - particularly in contact sports.

Knee rehab exercises are designed to get you back to full function as soon as possible. Without them, recovery can often be partial, leaving you with defects in both strength and range of motion.

The good news is that knee rehab exercises are usually low tech, requiring little specialist equipment. The important issue is finding a qualified sports physio who can design an effective therapy program for you.

What a professional adds to the mix is the knowledge of the joint function, knowledge of the relevant muscles, and experience of a range of suitable movements that can repair and strengthen your specific injury.

Most programs will be a combination of three main modalities:
  • Stretching and passive motion
  • Isotonic resistance
  • Eccentric movements
Ideally these should be demonstrated to you, then once the therapist is sure you can do them properly, with correct control and form, you should be able to perform them regularly either at home or in the gym.

Regularly performing a well-designed program can often result in a joint that is stronger and more resistant to injury than before the initial incident.
