Weight lifting equipment

At its most simple, weight lifting equipment consists of no more than a couple of bars, some plates, and a bench. This is a simple sport, the essence of which is that you challenge your body by working your muscles a little harder than is comfortable for them, and they respond by growing.

The simplest piece of weight lifting equipment is your body - when you perform exercises such as pull-ups, dips, or free squats, you use the heaviness of your own body to challenge the muscles.

However, when most people think of weight lifting equipment, there are two main types they are referring to:
  • Barbells and Dumbbells. These are the core of any resistance workout, offering endless possibilities, and the maximum effect on every muscle in the body.

  • Machines - Machines are ideal for beginners, allowing them to develop good form and technique. They also allow you to work quite heavily without needing a second person to 'spot' you. More advanced athletes also use machines for movements they can't duplicate using barbells and dumbbells. Cable machines would be a good example of this.
In addition there are a whole host of accessories that help you to get the most from your workouts. This would include everything from handles and ropes available for cable machines through to exercise balls and resistance bands.
