Biceps & arm exercises

The biceps is one of the most visible muscles in the body, and is often considered a measure of how strong or developed you are. As a result, guys in particular spend a lot of time working this muscle.

The pay-off for all that effort is that when you wear short sleeved shirts, you have something to show. A well defined bicep shows that you work out, and can impress both women and other guys.

There are a whole range of biceps exercises to choose from, using barbells, dumbbells, cables, and machines. For full development it pays to change around from one to another, and not allow the muscle to adapt - using the same exercise every time is a quick way to put a halt to muscle growth.

Always warm up well before working this muscle, it's easy to injure it if you lift too much weight too soon. And speaking of weight, growth comes not simply from piling on the weight, what's more important is that you perform each rep with maximum intensity.

Favourite exercises include the following:
  • Dumbbell curls
  • Barbell curls
  • Machine curls
  • Cable curls
Don't forget you also work this area when you perform compound exercises such as pull-ups, so consider a split routine that allows adequate time for recovery between workouts.
