Lower back

Lower back pain is currently the largest reported reason for sickness absence in the UK, with estimates suggesting that is costs UK business over ?5 billion per year! However, those who exercise regularly have learned that performing the right workouts can do much to protect you against these types of problems.

Lower back pain causes at least 50 million days' absence from work a year, with over half of people missing work due to pain in this area at some point in their working lives. So how do you protect against this?

Lower back exercises can prevent many common problems including:
  • Sciatica
  • Herniated discs
  • Muscle strains and spasms
These exercises are a part of any good core workout program - what core programs add to the mix is that they also include exercises for the abdominals, working on the principle that it is essential to have strength all way around the core of the body in order to protect it effectively.

It is thus recommended that in addition to exercises specifically targeting this area - for example, hyper-extensions on a Swiss ball - you also perform a good range of ab exercises, such as crunches, planks, and twisting movements.

The benefits of strengthening and protecting this area will more than outweigh the effort involved.
