Chest & muscle building exercises

Whether you're a man or a woman, you want your chest to look good. Fortunately, exercise gives you at least some control over this most visible of areas.

Improving the appearance of your chest has a number of strands to it - your diet, how much fat you carry, and much muscle you have in the area. We'll look at each in turn.

Diet will certainly affect the appearance of your chest. For women, some extra fat will make your chest look bigger, but it will also increase the size of your butt, thighs and just about everything else. It's the age old trade off for women - would you rather be small and lean or bigger and curvier?

For men there's not much of a trade-off. Lean is definitely perceived as the more aesthetically pleasing, especially where your chest is concerned. Man boobs are not a good look on anyone!

The role of cardio is primarily in helping you to shed and keep excess weight off. Almost all doctors and trainers recommend regular cardio sessions to maintain your weight and overall health.

Then there is the role of muscle. This can be crucial in a number of different ways. Firstly, for both men and women, more muscle in this area can improve appearance. Secondly, performing intense resistance workouts gives your metabolism a boost, helping to burn more calories.

Finally, building more muscle makes it easier to stay lean - each extra pound of muscle you carry burns between 15 and 35 calories per hour, 24/7.

So to look your best, and be comfortable when it's swimsuit time, the right combination of sensible diet, and regular cardio and resistance training will produce results every time.
