Glutes

Your glutes are an important muscle not just because of how they look, but also because of the effect that working them hard can have on your overall metabolism.

As you may know, your glutes are the biggest muscle in your body, so training them hard has a profound effect on the entire system. For body builders looking to pack on muscle, working the glutes with squats and leg presses are essential to spur muscle growth throughout the body.

For those looking to burn calories, working the glutes hard will stimulate the metabolism and increase fat burning.

There are two exercises that are particularly effective at working this area, squats and lunges. For those concerned about getting too big, the trick is in manipulating the weight you use and the number of repetitions to your advantage.

If your goal is to build muscle, then these exercise should be performed with heavier weights, 10 - 12 reps per set. Body builders will often perform 5 or 6 sets like this.

For better toning and definition, use lighter weights and work in the 15 - 20 reps range.

Whichever route you follow, you will be working one of the most important muscles in the body, both for aesthetics and function.
