Hip & leg exercises
Exercising the hips is not something most people think about, but this is a crucial area that helps link together the upper and lower body, and is thus involved in almost all movement.
The hip joint is a very mobile one, a ball and socket that is held in place by the action of the muscles and tendons around it. It has to deal with both direct loads and also large rotational forces. Injuries are quite common in sports such as football, tennis and golf.
Hips are also subject to cumulative damage from a lifetime of walking and running. Looking after this fragile area should thus be a goal for everyone.
The best exercises for this area are the same one you would use for strengthening your glutes. The following are highly recommended:
- Squats. The ultimate leg workout - works all the major muscles.
- Lunges. Another classic movement. Like squats, can be performed with or without weights for added variety.
- Leg press. An alternative to squats for those with a weak back or knees.
In addition, it is important to maintain the flexibility of this area. Regular stretching at the end of a workout will ensure that you stay both strong and flexible.
