Baseball

A sport considered synonymous with the USA, baseball is also extremely popular in Australia, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Asia.

It is a team sport that is generally played out of doors on a special diamond shaped grid. In baseball, there are two teams each consisting of nine players.

The aim of baseball is to get your team members around the four bases and safely back to home base. The pitcher from the opposing team throws the ball to a batter who hits it and attempts to run to first base. The batter is allowed three attempts to hit the ball before being considered 'out'.

After they hit it, the batter must reach the base before the other team throws the ball to the fielder on that base. If the batter judges that they have enough time, they can attempt to run to second and then third base. If they make it all the way to fourth base before the ball does, they have achieved a homerun.

There are no overall time restrictions. However the game is divided into nine innings where each team gets to bat until three of its players have been knocked out. The kind of ball used is key to the game and officially must weight between five and five and a quarter ounces. The centre consists of rubber and cork surrounded by yarn surrounded by white sewn cowhide. Though the professional leagues have a huge following, there are also numerous amateur leagues for both children and adults. Traditionally a sport that emphasises fun and team spirit, it's also a good way to get fit, strengthen your arms and improve hand eye coordination.
