Bowling

A sport that has existed in various forms since ancient Egyptian times, bowling is one of the best loved games in the world. In the United States the most common form of bowling is known as ten pin.

With this kind of bowling, the aim is to throw a heavily weighted ball down an alley to knock over as many of the ten pins as possible. Alleys were originally made out of wood but these have in modern times been largely replaced by synthetics. It's a game that can be played in teams and the scoring is quite straightforward. The pins are set up ten centimetres apart in a specific formation.

In the past, the pins had to be set up by hand but the game really came into its own when machines greatly speeded up how long it took to set up between frames. Each player is allowed two shots per frame to attempt to knock over the pins and a game is made up of ten frames.

What makes this sport so popular is that it can be played by anyone from the very young to the very old. Whether you're into it as a competitive league sport or just a good night out with your mates, it's a game that is based on the idea of socialising and enjoying yourself. While it may not be an intense form of exercise or an obvious way to burn calories, it's not without health benefits. It combines walking with light weight lifting. Perhaps more importantly it helps with coordination and balance. It's also an excellent way to relax and unwind. It can be played regardless of your fitness level and you can slowly develop your skills over time. It's a great family sport that is highly enjoyable for everyone.
