Gymnastics

A sport that keeps you flying, gymnastics borders on an art form. First used in ancient Greece to train soldiers, gymnastics continues to be hugely popular. So if you want to learn to tumble, stand on your hands, flip through the air and generally stun others with seemingly inhuman feats, try learning gymnastics.

Handstands and handsprings are not just for kids either. While this is a sport often associated with children due to their greater flexibility, there's no reason why you can't learn it later in life. All you need is patience and a good coach.

The benefits are considerable as this is a fun and efficient way to get in shape. It's one of the best ways to build strength and flexibility. As you get older you may find that your body is not as flexible as it used to be. This is often due to lack of muscle use rather than the ageing process itself. You can learn to greatly develop your balance and coordination as well as toning your body through performing sequences of movements.

As a form of resistance training, it's also an excellent way to strengthening your heart and lungs as well as all the muscles in your body. It's all about agility and being aware of your body as it exists in space and movement. The key to success is building up your confidence slowly. This also helps to avoid injuries.

With practice, you'll be amazed at the feats you can perform. It's also good for you mentally as it encourages concentration and teaches you to be completely there in the moment. This in turn will help you to relax and to lower your overall stress levels.
