Hiking

If you want to really appreciate nature, why not take up hiking? A form of recreation that can be enjoyed by young and old, hiking is a term that covers many different types of walking. Though if you're into hiking, you probably have in mind something a little more strenuous than a stroll around your local park.

But whether your idea of fun is local country walks or trekking through the Himalayas, this is perhaps the best way to really experience the natural world. You don't have any of the distractions of cars, buses or even bikes. In addition, you're far more likely to get to see wild life, as you won't scare them off by announcing your arrival miles in advance.

It's also a very pleasant way to get fit. While you should be careful to walk at a pace that suits your fitness level, it's possible to slowly build this up over time. You can strengthen your leg muscles as well as increase your overall fitness by increasing the capacity of your heart and lungs. As an outdoor activity, it's a great opportunity to breathe fresh air, which helps improve the circulation of oxygen around your body. Group walks can be an excellent way to socialise.

You should however bear in mind that many people like to explore forests and mountains precisely so that they can get away from the noise of city life. Try to be respectful of other people's desire for peace and quiet. Also show your appreciation of the beauty of nature by passing through it without leaving your mark. This includes not leaving garbage strewn around and avoiding setting fires. This kind of exercise can be just what the doctor ordered for reducing your stress levels.
