Hockey

Ice hockey, known simply as hockey in North America, is a hugely popular sport. While this popularity is rather dependent on climactic conditions, hockey is enjoyed not only in the United States and Canada but also in Scandinavian countries, as well as the Czech Republic, Russia, Switzerland and many others. Hockey is the national winter sport of Canada and it is here that it enjoys its most devoted following.

An extremely fast paced, exciting game, it requires considerable skill and a high level of fitness to play. There are two opposing teams; each made up of five players and a goalie. The aim of the game is to shoot the 'puck', a small hard disc, into your opponents' goal using a long stick. As all players are on ice skates, balance and coordination are also extremely important.

Players move at great speed and some body contact is allowed within strictly set parameters. Foul play results in your opponent being awarded a penalty shot. As the danger of falling and injury is quite high, players where a large amount of protective clothing in addition to helmets and face masks.

Exhilarating and fun, it is a game that will give your body a full workout. The intense bursts of energy required mean that it is not ideal for those who are just starting out on a fitness regime or suffer from a medical condition. However if you're looking for a challenge, it's an excellent way to develop the power of your heart and lungs. This helps to greatly reduce the chances of you developing heart disease and other complications later in life.
