Resistance band training
Though they've been around for a while, resistance band training is only now starting to catch on with a wider audience. The big advantage of resistance band training is their ability to provide smooth resistance throughout the entire range of movement.
Unlike machines or free weights, there's no easy part of the movement - when you try resistance band training you'll find that you can maintain muscle tension whether raising or lowering. You can concentrate on both the lifting and lowering phase of each exercise, thus challenging your muscles in a new way.
The advantages of a different workout system are both physical and mental - not only can you break thorough workout plateaus, you can avoid boredom.
Resistance band training is also great for people who travel regularly or else want to workout out at home but have little space for equipment. This is a small piece of equipment that fits easily into a gym bag or suitcase yet allows you to perform hundreds of different exercises.
There are many different types to choose from, allowing you to find a level of challenge that's right for you. The principal is simple - the thicker the band, the harder your workout. For a good all around workout you'll want several different levels of thickness as different exercises require more or less resistance.
When you are buying a set, be sure to also get door attachments, and either a chart of exercises or else a DVD that details the various possibilities.
