Elliptical trainer
They may look funny, but elliptical trainers are rapidly becoming one of the most popular choices in gyms and health clubs around the country. Once you get over their strange appearance and give them a try, you'll soon find that they provide an excellent workout.
If you're still not sure about the benefits of elliptical trainers, consider what they have to offer.
First and foremost, they provide a low impact workout. Compared with running or walking, elliptical trainers are much kinder on the knees, hips, ankles and low back. They are therefore an excellent choice for older people or those with a history or susceptibility to impact injuries.
In addition, even though this is a low impact activity, because it is weight bearing, it can still help to build bone density and inhibit the onset of osteoporosis.
This is also an excellent all round workout. Because the machine mimics the normal movement of the foot, leg, and hip during walking or running, you use all your leg muscles, giving you a total lower-body workout. Additionally, because the foot pedals can be worked in both directions (forward or back) you can target your lower body in different ways.
In addition to the leg action, most machines also work your upper body. While your legs are the primary movers, with your hands gripping the moving handlebars, you also exercise your arms and upper body. By working the muscles in your back, shoulders, chest, biceps, and triceps, you get a much better overall workout.
