Recumbant bike
For a comfortable workout, a recumbent bike is hard to beat. They are becoming more and more popular, and are now found in most gyms and health clubs.
Recumbent bikes are particularly popular with older people or those with back problems, because of their comfortable position and easy, non-impact motion. However, don't let that fool you - they also provide a great workout.
Whereas on an upright machine you have weight and gravity on your side when you pedal, on a recumbent bike the reclined position means that you have to work harder in order to turn the pedals.
The position also has an effect on your muscles. With the pedals in front of you rather than below, you'll find that you work your glutes and thighs differently than on an upright, adding to the benefits of your cycling workout.
These machines are increasingly being recommended by doctors and trainers, because the comfortable position places less stress on your back, wrists, shoulders and butt.
A good machine will usually offer a range of programmes, varying from easy settings for beginners through to hill simulated workouts that will provide a workout tough enough for even the fittest.
Finally, many people find that the comfortable, laid back position allows them to read a book or magazine whilst pedalling, helping their workout pass more quickly.
