Stepper

Using a stepper is a great way to get a low-impact workout which focuses on your glutes, hamstrings and calf muscles. Although they are popular with women, who tend to focus on this area of their body, steppers are great for guys too, providing an effective cardio workout that is a change from the treadmill or exercise bike.

Modern steppers are expensive, sophisticated machines, which offer computer-controlled monitors to display your heart rate, distance climbed, number of steps climbed and calories burned.

For a more varied workout they also offer a variety of pre-programmed workouts such as hill workouts and intervals.

In many gyms they are set up in such a way that you can watch TV while exercising, allowing your workout time to pass more quickly.

Even if you don't want to perform your whole cardio workout on one of these machines, they can be part of a great multi-machine workout, in which you also include a rower, treadmill and exercise bike, for example. Ten minutes on each will give you a 40 minute workout that really works the body.

Using this machine is easy - just be sure to move naturally, standing upright (not leaning forward on the rails) and taking full steps. You'll soon appreciate why so many people use these machines for their cardio workouts.
